I think we live in a world which is so demanding of empirical truths that it becomes like a sort of cultural fascism: people want to know what something is ABOUT rather than simply experiencing it. There’s an attentiveness to the rhythm of the land, for example, and how movement occurs throughout and around Trefeurig, with the regularity of church, the harvest, or even the seasons themselves. It’s also hard to avoid the idea of the library as indicating the end of a way of life, as books themselves slide into.. For him, the “latent film” is more important, and that is the film that represents “a journey from nature to culture, or a journey depicting a form of growing up or evolving.”The history of Trefeurig, essentially a character in the film, is rooted in the mining industry, though instead of the traditional Welsh resource of coal (see PROUD VALLEY for that), Trefeurig was a region rich in lead and silver. James (AKA Aphex Twin), somehow embellishes Koppel’s stated aim of uniting the internal and external landscape.
After Marlow screened it for SF audiences, Koppel offered to donate the actual film print to Marlowe, permitting him to show the film anywhere and any way he could, and to keep any money from sales. The arrangement included the film itself, supporting materials, and even the hosting of a preparatory “sketch” for the final film called A SKETCHBOOK FOR THE LIBRARY VAN.
